Texas is famous for big largemouth bass, thanks in part to decades of Florida-strain stocking and lakes like Fork, Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend and Conroe. A simple setup covers most situations.

The gear checklist

1. A medium-heavy baitcasting rod and reel

A 7-foot medium-heavy rod handles Texas rigs, jigs, spinnerbaits and crankbaits. If you only own one rod, this is it.

2. A medium spinning combo

For lighter lures such as wacky-rigged worms, drop shots and small swimbaits, especially in clear water or after a cold front.

3. Line

Fluorocarbon is nearly invisible and sinks. Braid is strong for heavy cover like hydrilla. Many anglers use braid with a fluorocarbon leader.

4. Soft plastics and hooks

Plastic worms and creature baits on a Texas rig are the classic Texas bass setup. Green pumpkin and watermelon colors are a good start.

5. Moving baits

Spinnerbaits, square-bill crankbaits and lipless crankbaits cover water quickly. Lipless baits over grass are popular in spring and fall.

6. Topwater lures

Early mornings in late spring through fall are prime topwater times. A walking bait and a popper cover most needs.

7. Polarized sunglasses

Polarized lenses cut glare so you can see cover, beds and fish, and they protect your eyes from hooks.

8. Measuring board and lip grip

With a 14-inch minimum and lake slot limits, a measuring board helps you stay legal and release fish quickly.
