Best Fishing Times in Texas Today (Solunar Calculator)
Major and minor solunar feeding periods for Texas lakes and bays, calculated in your browser from moon and sun positions. Pick a spot and a date.
How solunar fishing times work
Major periods (about 2 hours) are centered on the moon passing directly overhead (upper transit) or directly underfoot (lower transit). Minor periods (about 1 hour) are centered on moonrise and moonset. Solunar theory, popularized by John Alden Knight in the 1920s and 1930s, holds that fish and game feed more actively during these windows, and most of all when they line up with sunrise or sunset, or fall near a new or full moon.
Our rating adds a point when the moon is within about 1.5 days (2 points) or 3.5 days (1 point) of new or full, and another when a feeding period overlaps the hour around sunrise or sunset.
Be realistic: solunar tables are a traditional planning tool, not a guarantee. Water temperature, wind, fronts, tide movement on the coast, and water clarity usually matter more. On Texas bays, combine these times with a tide chart from NOAA Tides & Currents.
Times are computed from standard astronomical formulas (after Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms) and are typically within a few minutes of U.S. Naval Observatory values. Sunrise and sunset use the standard −0.833° altitude.
