The gear checklist
1. Calls
A box call is the easiest to learn and loud enough to locate birds. A slate or pot call adds soft purrs and clucks. Mouth (diaphragm) calls keep your hands free but take practice.
2. Turkey-specific shotgun loads and choke
Turkey loads and a tight extra-full choke give dense patterns at the head and neck. Pattern your gun at 20, 30 and 40 yards to learn your real effective range.
3. Full camo including face and hands
Turkeys see color and movement extremely well. A facemask and gloves matter as much as the jacket.
4. Turkey vest with seat cushion
A vest with a padded seat lets you sit still against a tree for an hour, and keeps calls and shells organized.
5. Decoys
A hen decoy, sometimes with a jake, can bring a gobbler the last few yards. Use care on public land, where other hunters may mistake decoys for live birds.
6. Pop-up ground blind (optional)
A blind hides movement and is a good option for youth hunters and bow hunters.
Regulation details checked against the TPWD 2026-27 Outdoor Annual on October 23, 2026. Regulations can change mid-year. Confirm at tpwd.texas.gov before you go.
